CAD Investment Scam Seminar 2004

In recent years, international cold call scams had hit investors all over the world.  Many investors had lost substantial sums in worthless or illiquid securities touted over the phone.  Some were coaxed to deposit monies for performance bond for the sale of shares, only to realize later that they had been further deceived.  To raise awareness on this crime trend, CAD organized a seminar entitled “Investment Scams – Threats and Safeguards” on  17 March 2004  Experts from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Thailand’s Office of Securities and Exchange Commission and the Monetary Authority of Singapore were invited to address the audience on transnational investment scams. The seminar attracted more than 200 participants from the business community, banks, lawyers, law enforcement and regulators.

The organisation of seminars, including this, is one of CAD's ongoing efforts to raise awareness to the new challenges and risks posed by transnational fraudsters. By bringing together local service providers such as professional secretarial firms, banks, lawyers, law enforcement and regulators, we sought to share and disseminate messages on the threat of boiler rooms & cold call scams, the legal framework in place and the prevention strategies and to enlist their help in the early detection of suspicious activities.
